Mindfulness Mindfulness is a way of learning to pay attention and be aware of what is happening in the present without judgement or expectation. We are often so lost in thought, thinking about the past or the future, or so preoccupied with how we want things to be (or how we don't want things to be), that we lose touch with our feelings, our bodies and behaviour.
Mindfulness practice is a simple, systematic way to reconnect with our own inner resources. It combines new medical science with ancient traditions of meditation, yoga and personal development. Being mindful allows us to choose how we respond to life's challenges, so instead of going through life on auto-pilot we discover how to participate actively in our own healing.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction was developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre by Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues. It has proved to be one of the most long standing, successful and well researched stress-reduction programmes worldwide.
The course involves training in mindfulness meditation together with yoga, healthy breathing, relaxation and stress management techniques. Regular home practice is an essential part of the course.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy is modelled on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme but it places greater emphasis on the psychological aspects of our experience and includes techniques and exercises from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
Both courses are taught by a BACP Accredited counsellor who is trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and is also a British Wheel of Yoga teacher with over thirty years experience of teaching yoga and meditation to individuals and groups.
